Job Summary Under the direction of the Legal Support Supervisor, the Proofreader serves as a knowledge expert in the use of the English language, word usage, word division, syntax, spelling, pronunciation, and punctuation. It is responsible for proofreading legislative documents for the Office of Legislative Counsel (OLC) style, grammar, and syntax, and for supporting the Legal Support Services Section and OLC during legislative recesses. Mandatory overtime on weekdays, weekends, and holidays is required during peak periods of the legislative session. Responsibilities Proofread legislative documents during the annual legislative session (typically January through September), meeting production standards that quantify both quantity and quality of work. Perform additional duties during legislative recesses as directed by management and consistent with the classification level. Maintain a thorough understanding of OLC style, grammar, and syntax guidelines. Support the Legal Support Services Section and OLC as needed. Complete mandatory overtime during legislative sessions and other peak periods. Minimum Requirements Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications listed in the Classification Specification for the Proofreader position. See the Class Specification for details. Desirable Qualifications Expertise in English language usage, word division, syntax, spelling, pronunciation, punctuation, and proofreading procedures. Knowledge of the legislative process, calendar, constitutional deadlines, and legal terminology. Exceptional spelling, grammar, and speech skills, with meticulous attention to detail. Strong interpersonal communication skills for dealing tactfully with legal staff, support staff, the public, and external stakeholders. Adaptability to changing work priorities, fluctuating work hours, and mandatory overtime. Ability to produce quality work under stressful conditions. Willingness to accept increasingly difficult responsibilities with a high level of attention to detail. Ability to assist with other tasks of the office as workload demands. Benefits and Working Conditions Salary: $5,774.00 – $5,947.00 per month. Job Type: Permanent, Full‑Time. Work Location: Hybrid (telework and on‑site at 925 L Street, Suite 900, Sacramento, CA).
